Save America, a Super Political Action Committee (PAC) established by former President Trump, is expected to declare that it has spent more than $40 million on legal costs.
Spending Exceeds Campaign Fundraising
Inside sources have suggested that Save America is projected to announce an expenditure of $40.2 million on legal fees. This information will reportedly be shared in a filing on an upcoming Monday. Interestingly, this figure surpasses all other expenses linked to Trump’s potential 2024 presidential bid. It even outdoes the fundraising efforts for the second quarter of 2023.
PAC Funding Trump’s Legal Defense
These insiders also reveal that investigators probing into Trump’s affairs have raised queries about who is footing the bill for Trump’s legal team. Trump’s advisors clarified that Save America has been handling the legal bills for those individuals who have sought assistance from Trump and his advisors, and who are currently entwined in ongoing investigations.
Rising Legal Expenses
The team around the former president has stressed that the costs related to providing legal help to a large number of individuals are necessary. They also cautioned that these expenses are likely to continue to grow as investigations carry on.
Legal Fees for Trump and Allies
In total, Save America has disbursed $56 million for legal fees on behalf of Trump and his allies. The PAC has also sought reimbursement for a $60 million donation it previously made to another group supporting Trump.
Criticism of the Department of Justice
Steven Chung, a spokesperson for Trump, offered a strong critique of the Department of Justice. He stated that the department continues to target innocent Americans due to their ties to Trump, despite having no valid case against them. He also suggested that the PAC’s contribution to their legal fees was necessary to protect these individuals from financial hardship and undue harassment.
Trump Faces Multiple Legal Challenges
As these developments occur, Trump is dealing with a variety of legal challenges and federal investigations aimed at both him and his company. Last week, special counsel Jack Smith filed three additional charges against Trump. These new allegations join the original 37 counts related to Trump’s supposed mishandling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Senator Vance Defends PAC’s Actions
Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio came to the defense of Save America in a social media post. He dismissed criticisms that Trump’s PAC spent $40 million on legal fees as being baseless. He further argued that the main issue is the systemic corruption that necessitates such high costs to fight against. In his view, any politician could face similar financial demands when dealing with legal issues.
